Overview
About the Westmoreland Heritage trail
The Westmoreland Heritage Trail is a scenic bicycle and walking trail covering 8.5 miles from Saltsburg to Delmont and 9.3 miles from Export to Trafford. Future expansion is underway to connect the two sections into a continuous 22-mile trail from Saltsburg to Trafford, and to extend four more miles to connect with the Great Allegheny Passage.
The trail is ideal for walking, jogging, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Its wide, flat, handicapped-accessible surface accommodates everyone regardless of age or physical ability. Several parks sit just off the trail, including Duff Park behind the Robert's Parcel trailhead, BY Park near the Trafford trailhead, and Saltsburg Park near the Saltsburg trailhead.
The heritage corridor includes the historic community centers of Saltsburg, Slickville, Export, South Murrysville, and Trafford — towns that grew from local industries in salt mining, coal mining, natural gas extraction, and the manufacture of electrical generation equipment.

The history
Rail & industrial heritage
The 'Heritage' in the name is literal: the trail strings together towns built by salt mining, coal mining, natural gas, and electrical-equipment manufacturing, and follows the rail lines that served them.
